Many people are born with curly, textured, natural hair, which is lovely and bouncy.
Curly hair naturally takes on the shape of a tight spiral or a bouncy, ribbon-like shape without your assistance.
But because of the same characteristics that give curls their shape, persons with curly hair may need to be a little more cautious about how they sleep at night to preserve their attractive locks.
We discuss why taking care of curly hair while you sleep may require a different approach and how to create fuller, healthier curly hair while you sleep.
If you have curly hair, it’s best not to sleep directly on the hair follicles.
Crushing your hair with the weight of your head can leave curls looking matted and messy. Sleeping on your back can also create frizz and knots in your hair as you move your head from side to side during the night.
If you have curly hair, sleeping on your side or on your stomach is your best bet. As an added bonus, sleeping on your side has all sorts of other health benefits
Tips to preserve the curl
In addition to sleeping on your side or on your stomach, there are additional ways you can preserve your curls as you snooze.
1. Use a silk or satin pillowcase
The diameter of your hair shaft changes depending on the shape of your curls if you are of African or Hispanic descent and have curly hair. This indicates that the thickness of your hair shaft isn’t uniform throughout, which may increase the risk of breakage.
It can stress your hair follicle and increase the likelihood of breaking when you toss and turn when you sleep.
Change the surface your curls rest on while you sleep to prevent frizz and breakage. Even those with a high thread count might scratch against your hair strands and absorb natural oils from your hair.
The structure of your hair can be protected by using a silk or satin pillowcase.
2. Put your hair in a ‘pineapple’
By tying your hair up at the crown of your head using a satin or cotton scrunchie rather than a hair elastic, you can protect your hair while you sleep.
Simply gather your hair at the crown of your head, knot the scrunchie around it once, and take care not to over-tighten the pineapple or pull too hard.
As demonstrated in this YouTube video by Joy Before Her, you may also use this technique in conjunction with a silk scarf or hair bonnet.
3. Do twists or braids
Less hair strands will brush against other follicles or your pillow as your hair becomes more secure.
Your curls’ structure can be maintained throughout the night with simple twists held with bobby pins, little elastics, or braids.
4. Use a silk or satin bonnet or headscarf
A hat or headscarf can protect your hair and serve another purpose.
These hair accessories not only prevent your hair from rubbing against your sheets and becoming frizzy, but they also keep it in place as you sleep, preserving the structure of your curls.
5. Try a spritz or two of product
Your hair might gain shine and bounce from a leave-in conditioner that replenishes the keratin in the hair follicle.
Spray-on conditioners may also make your hair softer and simpler to style in the morning by strengthening hair strands that have been weakened by heat styling and hair colour.
How to curl your hair at night
If you don’t have naturally curly hair, you can use some tried-and-true hairstyling tricks to get bouncy, lovely curls while you sleep.
Even if you do have curly hair, you may use these techniques to save time and have fuller curls that are styled and prepared for action as soon as you wake up.
Hair rollers
The traditional hair-rolling method has advanced significantly in recent years.
While you can use traditional plastic or metal curlers on your head while you sleep, doing so may cause discomfort because they press into your skin.
You can buy alternatives to “sleep-in” curlers that are softer and more comfortable, such as flex-rods.
+ Simply divide your hair into pieces and roll each area around the curler starting at the ends and working your way up to the crown.
+ For best results, clip the curlers on top of your head and sleep with a hat covering the curlers.
+ Most curlers can also be used on wet hair.
Wet hair in braids
If you don’t mind sleeping whit wet hair you might find this method to be the most comfortable.
After you wash your hair as you normally would, divide your hair and create one braid, pigtails, or three braids.
A French braid works if you want the curls to start high on the crown of your head. The more braids you create, the more waves you’ll have.
Spritz with some leave-in conditioning product before you lay down for the night.
In the morning, carefully take out the braids.
Brush out your hair if you want a more subtle look.
Plopping
“Plopping” is another way you can fall asleep with wet hair and wake up with curls.
When your hair is freshly washed, infuse it with curl gel, an alcohol-free mousse, or another curl-shaping product of your choice.
Flip your wet hair forward onto a flat, cotton T-shirt. All of your hair should be centered on the shirt.
Next, fold the flap of fabric behind your neck over your head and secure the arms of the shirt in a knot.
You can sleep with your hair secured in the shirt overnight and wake up with beautiful, full curls.
